Making sense of large CNA solution sets with tailored visualizations.
Fuzzy-set Coincidence Analysis applied to organizational-level occupational health and safety data tends to return very large numbers of solutions. In several projects, Ole Henning Sørensen and Marc Backhausen ran into exactly that problem: the solution set was too large to be read off and interpreted in the usual way.
To make such solution sets interpretable, they developed a set of visualizations that display how the alternative and complex causes relate to one another and to the modelled outcomes. In this talk they present the visualizations, explain what each of them shows, and discuss how they can be used to interrogate and present CNA results.
The talk is work in progress and is intended as an invitation to discuss: the presenters are keen to hear how other members of the CNA community handle large solution sets, and where the visualizations could be developed further.
Ole Henning Sørensen (ph.d.) is a Senior Consultant in the Department of Ergonomics and Musculoskeletal Health at the National Research Centre for the Working Environment (NFA), where he has worked for two decades. His research concerns the transfer and exchange of scientific knowledge into practice and policy, alongside occupational health and safety, work organisation and musculoskeletal pain. Recent projects address the societal impact of research through institutional capacity building (RICaB) and work-related health in municipal welfare work. He has worked with Coincidence Analysis for years and organized the 2025 Copenhagen edition of the CNA training workshop.
Marc Backhausen Erichsen is a Research Assistant in the group for Psychosocial Working Environment and Safety Culture and Occupational Accidents at NFA. His research concerns the psychosocial working environment and safety culture, particularly in construction, and how contractual and organisational conditions shape occupational health and safety. He takes part in the SAMBA project on systematic occupational health and safety work and in the FORTE project led by Ole Henning Sørensen. He has conducted CNA analyses in several projects and contributed to developing visualizations of CNA results.
